I did it............

Unbeknown to anyone i decided enough was enough and to try and go to the Dentist so as soon as we evenutally got to work i went to

Kings Lynn Dental Access Centre

6 King Street, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE30 1ES
01553 769264

http://www.nhs.uk/Services/dentists/Overview/DefaultView.aspx?id=26110

And they fitted me in at 11.15am, so nervously i returned.

The Dentist x rayed me then took out my tooth and glued it back in, i was in the chair an hour, he stressed this is a temporary solution, and  needs something more permanant doing later.

Because i am so nervous he agreed to do an assessment and complete the course of treatment if i promised to register with a dentist when the treatment complete, which was nice as this is an emergency only dentist and they do not usually do that.

After the treatment, i went into shock, i felt woozy and dizzy and went very cold all of a sudden, i feared i couldn't get back to the shop.

Car Troubles

On the way to work in Calendar Club this morning the car finally gave up, the clutch has gone, so Mum took us to work and Steven collected us.

To cap it all when the car broke down at Sandringham Steven and Jon passed us and wondered what we were doing................... with family like that who needs enemys.

So we are left with two choices, get Stevens old Cleo on the road or, get our Fiesta on the road which could be expensive decision.........decisions.

On checking the insurance for the cleo

£231 for 1 month
£166 for 12 months

Silly...................

My second Christmas Cross Stitch

The Atom Heart Murders by John Caulfield

I can't say i was completely enthralled by this book, i wasn't that impressed with the characters and the way the storyline was portrayed.

The Atom Heart Murders When Superintendent John Murdoch discovers the tortured body of a young female barrister in her plush Cape Town home, all fingers point towards a notorious terrorist cell. But when a second body is found, the circumstances surrounding the killings begin to kindle sinister memories from Murdoch's past. Beneath the veneer of perfect blue skies and white sandy beaches, Murdoch descends into the darkness of the new South Africa; and as he becomes more obsessed with his own tragic history, we learn that he may not be who, or even what he claims .

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Not a bad film but unfortunately it just didn't hold my attention for some reason.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

More missions that are NOT impossible in this fourth instalment, directed by Brad Bird, director of 'Ratatouille'.

Decision time

When i visited an Age UK customer yesterday, i was asked if i could go privately as she didn't really want to go through an agency, she first contacted Red Cross, filled in the forms, asked when they could start and they said they had no volunteers, then AgeUK became involved, and she only booked 2 sessions.

So when i got home i discussed it with Bob and checked my staff handbook.  The only reference in the Staff Handbook read

It is important to remember that you are visiting customers as an employee of AgeUK Norfolk and not as a Private Individual.  You must therefore not undertake any additional privately arranged services outside the service agreed in the Menu of Services and coordinated by AgeUK Norfolk.  Any requests for additional services should be reported to your line Manager.
The customers Menu of Services stress it is for 2 hours only, so because of that i read that after the 2 hours has been completed,  i have no further obligation to AgeUK Norfolk.

We also got talking about craft she is in a wheelchair and does beading, but has no outlet, i discussed my cross stitch and she asked if it is possible for her to pay half of the stall and i display her goods and she pays me a commission, this will reduce my overheads, add interest to my stall, and i may even earn some money, can't be bad.

Nan

A day doesn't go by that i dont think of my beloved Nan - RIP

Apart from the exhaustion this is causing. my knees are causing me chronic pain and discomfort.

On top of that situation, i have severe numbness and tingling in my right hand, it is there all the time but worst overnight, i have done research which suggests carpal tunnel syndrom.

Cross Stitch Guiding

Last night i did some cross stitching with 1st Hunstanton Guides, and today with 1st Docking Brownies, it was a lovely time with both units, i thoroughly enjoyed it and they did so well

Take the Monkeys and Run by Karen Cantwell

A thoroughly enjoyable book, humour, adventure, danger and fun what more could you ask.

A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery #1

Film lover Barbara Marr is a typical suburban mom living the typical suburban life in her sleepy little town of Rustic Woods, Virginia. Typical, that is until she sets out to find the missing link between a bizarre monkey sighting in her yard and the bone chilling middle-of-the-night fright fest at the strangely vacant house next door. When Barb talks her two friends into some seemingly innocent Charlie’s Angels-like sleuthing, they stumble upon way more than they bargained for and uncover a piece of neighborhood history that certain people would kill to keep on the cutting room floor.

Build a Shop

Today we did the set up for Calendar Club, it is a lovely shop, we had a set back with one of the palletts missing, which contained a lot of cascades, it has been tracked down and should be with us by 9am tomorrow.

So the opening will probably by delayed for a while.

Apart from that everything went OK,we are pretty shattered though.

Deja Vu

Tonight we watched this film, it was a brilliant film, well acted and thought provoking.
When a ferry filled with crewmen from the USS Nimitz and their families is blown up in New Orleans, Federal Agent Doug Carlin (Washington) is brought in to help with the investigation. He becomes attached to an experimental FBI surveillance unit that uses spacefolding technology to look back a little over four days into the past. While tracking down the bomber Carlin gets an idea in his head: could they use the device to actually travel back in time and not only prevent the bombing but also the murder of a local woman whose truck was used in the atrocity?
Starring Denzel Washington, Paula Patton, Val Kilmer, Adam Goldberg, Jim Caviezel, James Caviezel

The Butterfly Project

If you know someone who cuts themselves share the butterfly project with them.
 The Rules are:

1. When you feel like you want to cut, take a marker, pen, or sharpies and draw a butterfly on your arm or hand.
2. Name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.
3. You must let the butterfly fade naturally. NO scrubbing it off.
4. If you cut before the butterfly is gone, you’ve killed it. If you dont cut, it lives.
5. ...If you have more than one butterfly, cutting kills all of them.
6. Another person may draw them on you. These butterflies are extra special. Take good care of them.
7. Even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyways, to show your support. If you do this, name it after someone you know that cuts or is suffering right now, and tell them. It could help.

Steven at Doctors

Today Steven went to the Doctors and he gave him a sick note for 3 months.

Steven has been told he is aneamic. Normal levels are 12 and Steven is 10, coincidentally Debbie has just been diagnosed with Aneamia with exactly the same levels.  Steven has got to go to the hospital to have a camera down to make sure there is no internal bleeding.

Anaemia is a condition that develops when your blood does not contain enough healthy red blood cells. These cells are the main transporters of oxygen to the organs in your body. Symptoms of anaemia - like fatigue - occur because your organs aren't getting enough oxygen.

10 on the anemia scale means a few different things; that you are below range with a Hgb of 10, indicating anemia, classed as a grade 1 borderline mild to moderate anemia, you are pulling from your iron stores (ferritin) in the bone marrow and organs. All of which is corrected with iron IF this is due to a straight forward simple (IDA) iron deficiency anemia.

Sophies Annual Review

Today we attended Sophies Annual Review, present were Martin her Class Teacher and Joe the Deputy Head and someone from admin taking notes.

It started off with a Powerpoint presentation of Sophie, Sophie talked us through it.

Then Sophie went back to class.

Academically Sophie is doing very well - she is in the top set for Maths, and middle set for Literacy.

The areas for concern are her occasional behaviour and bouts of temper, these are causing occasional problems in class which are being dealt with, through circle time and discussion, there has been occasion that Sophie has needed restraining.

Also the way she deals with relationships and friendships and tried to manipulate her peer group to get her own way, this is going to be worked on.

They were interested in her interest and questions about the Bible and God, they have asked Joella Nash if she can spend time with Sophie to discuss her bible questions,  Joella has taken a service in our church and has met Sophie.

The Blake Curse by I. C. Camilleri

I just finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it and it just had everything in it.

Ben Blake, an eighteen year old British Intelligence agent brimming with gifts; intellectual genius, striking appearance, impeccable acting skills and a heightened sixth sense... gifts that all guarantee the success of his first undercover assignment. He effortlessly infiltrates university life in Cambridge and befriends Cathy, the daughter of billionaire Edward Carter, one of the most influential and politically secure titans of the time.

Samantha Black, known as the elusive and exquisitely petite Sam. She rises from the ashes and battles her dark legacy. Her cryptic past and deep secrets become firmly intertwined with Ben’s investigations, shredding his carefully thought out plan to bits.

Jake Snell, the young rugged Earl of Yorkley, the enigma, the rogue full of vices....but possessing abundant resourcefulness, creativity and determination. He is Ben’s only lifeline in this treacherous game.

The Blake Curse is all about heartrending choices, fast pace suspense and that faith in the thread of human goodness.

Christmas Lantern

1 roll of masking tape
10+ pea sticks approx 24" long
tissue paper
PVA adhesive
2 pieces of stiff wire
1 sponge
garden cane to hold lantern from
1 small lightweight battery powered torch/tealight

Method: (use masking tape at each joint)
Start by making two isosceles triangles using your sticks
Join the two triangles at their apexes and add two sticks to form a square base. Then add two more sticks across the diagonals of the base This should give you a basic pyramid shape with a cross on the bottom to strengthen it. You then need to make a small door so that you can access your light. You can then continue adding to this shape to create your own design.
Once happy with the shape of your lantern use the two pieces of wire to make a secure carrying loop at the top of the lantern and a hook inside the lantern to hold the torch/tealight inside.
Using a sponge start to apply PVA to one side of the tissue paper working away from yourself. Attach the paper to the lantern overlapping. Do the sides first, then the base and the door last.
(PVA is best diluted with water 2:l to obtain a good working consistency) When it's completly covered, leave to dry overnight.
The finished lantern can then be attached to a garden cane by the wire loop. Insert the tealight through the door, turn it on and you are ready to join the procession.

Today was Girlguiding Norfolk Dabble Day, it was held at Hewitt School, Cecil Road, Norwich.

Calorie Calculator

Know How Many Calories You Should Eat a Day

Don't guess at the number of calories you need to to lose or gain weight. Choose the appropriate calculator below. You'll find out how many calories you need per day, and the recommended amounts of carbohydrates, fats and proteins:

Men's Calorie Calculator1

Women's Calorie Calculator2

My calculators are based on the Harris-Benedict formula for determining your basal metabolic rate (BMR), plus your active metabolic rate (AMR), which is based on your estimation of your daily physical activity.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

Active Metabolic Rate

Calculate your AMR by using your BMR and estimating your current level of activity. If you are:
  • Sedentary (little or no exercise) - your AMR = BMR x 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/work 1-3 days per week) - your AMR = BMR x 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/work 3-5 days per week) - your AMR = BMR x 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/work 6-7 days a week) - your AMR = BMR x 1.725
  • Extra active (very hard exercise/work 6-7 days a week) - your AMR = BMR x 1.9
Your AMR represents the number of calories you need to stay at your current weight. If you want to lose weight3, you need to increase your level of physical activity level or decrease your caloric intake by eating less. If you reduce your current caloric intake by 500 calories every day, you will lose about one pound each week. Don't go below 1,200 calories each day and don't waste your time on crash diets.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Inflammation1 is the painful component of arthritis (symptoms include pain, swelling, red coloration to the area, and sometimes loss of movement or function), and may be a component of cardiovascular diseases.
Can the foods you eat help reduce inflammation? Some experts believe it's possible, so I'll explain which foods may be anti-inflammatory foods (and which ones to avoid).

Foods To Eat

Fats and Oils. Omega-3 fatty acids2 are found in cold-water oily fish, flax seeds3, canola oil and pumpkin seeds. Consumption of monounsaturated fatty acids4 found in olive oil, avocados5, and nuts has been linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Other healthful oils include rice bran oil, grape seed oil, and walnut oil.
Fruits and Vegetables. Whole fruits, berries and vegetables are all rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals6. Choose green and brightly colored vegetables, and whole fruits such as broccoli, chard, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, carrots and squash. You should eat at least five and preferably more) servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Protein Sources. Possible anti-inflammatory protein7 sources include lean poultry, fish and seafood (fatty fish offer protein as well as omega-3 fatty acids). Soy and soy foods such as tofu and tempeh, along with other legumes and nuts and seeds can be used as plant-based protein sources. The best nuts are walnuts, almonds, pecans and Brazil nuts.
Beverages. Your body needs water. Drink tap, sparkling or bottled water, 100-percent fruit juices, herbal tea, low-sodium vegetable juice, and low- or non-fat milk are all healthful sources of water.

Foods To Avoid

Loading up on junk foods, high-fat meats, sugar, and highly processed foods8 may increase the potential for inflammation in your body. Reduce your consumption of trans-fats9 and saturated fats10 by cutting back on highly processed foods, red meats, and high-fat processed meats such as bacon and sausage. Cut back on refined white flours in bread and pasta (look for 100-percent whole-grains instead). Eliminate added sugars11 by decreasing your consumption of sugary sodas, pastries, candy, rich desserts, and pre-sweetened cereals.
Another possible source of irritation comes from the nightshade family of plants12, which includes potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. These vegetables contain a chemical alkaloid called solanine, which can trigger pain in some people. While there aren't any formal research findings that back the claim about nightshade plants, some people do believe they get relief from the symptoms of pain and inflammation when they eliminate them.

Anti-inflammatory Diet Tips

Choose fresh foods more often and choose fewer heavily processed foods. Here are some tips:
  • For breakfast, try oatmeal served with fresh berries and walnuts.
  • Snack on whole fruits, nuts, seeds, and fresh vegetables instead of cookies and candy.
  • Eat more fish and less fatty red meat.
  • Cook with olive oil and canola oil.
  • Try a tofu stir-fry or scramble.
  • Have a salad with lots of fresh vegetables as your meal.
  • Stay away from deep-fried foods; bake, broil, poach or stir-fry instead.
  • Choose dark green or brightly colored vegetables as side dishes -- they should fill half your dinner plate.
Maintaining a healthy weight also appears to be helpful for reducing pain and inflammation. I designed these calorie calculator13 to help you determine how many calories you need each day.

Calendar Club and things

This morning i had the day off work as i had an X Ray appointment.

So after rising late, we treated ourselves to a mini breakfast at the club, at 500 calories, not a good choice perhaps on first week of diet :(.

Then we went into Kings Lynn to look at the shop we will be having in King's Lynn, it is 24 New Conduit Street and used to be the gift shop Fuzion, it is a good clean shop, looks good.

After we looked round the shop, we did a bit of shopping and then went to the hospital for my X-Ray, which was very efficient and didn't go too badly at all.

We popped into Mums on the way home.

For tea i had rice and chicken, but Bob misread the label and took the calorie content for a pack, and it was 1/2 a pack, so my diet not been too good today.

The Big Year

Not a brilliant film, pretty sad and pathetic really

Three fanatical bird watchers (Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, Jack Black) compete to spot the highest number of species as El Nino sends an extraordinary variety of breeds flying up into the U.S., but they quickly discover that there are more important things than coming out on top of the competition.

Food sensitivities

Posted by Janet on Facebook - interesting eh

While few of us have serious life-threatening allergies to food, many people unknowingly suffer from intolerances and sensitivities to certain foods which can cause a wide range of vague symptoms such as stomach pain, bloating and skin problems. Shockingly, food sensitivities could also be to blame if you are struggling to lose weight. When you eat foods you are sensitive to, this triggers a reaction in the body which increases levels of insulin and cortisol; two hormones which increase fat storage, particularly around the abdomen. Furthermore, our body’s reaction to food sensitivities can also, ironically, create an addiction to the foods we are sensitive to, causing us to crave them more.

Restarting the diet

Well weighed myself for first time since 9th March, i have gained a stone, which is a surprise considering how physically active my life has been.  It is always the same i reach the dreaded plateaux, so give up then gain, how pathetic is my life.

Tenby Ferry Cross Stitch

My latest Cross Stitch Kit, will be available soon

Oh Sew Good Cross Stitch Designs

Below is an article which appeared in Septembers edition of Hunstanton Town and Around.

Why!
I used to do cross stitch many years ago, after a break I decided to go back to it.
On looking for kits, I found that they were either big, and complicated, thus very expensive, or small with flowers and teddies. There seemed nothing in between. On top of that, I had always had an inkling to do a Hunstanton Cross Stitch. These two things gave me a glimmer of an idea.
Decision
I decided that if it wasn’t available, I would have a go and make kits to sell as there appeared to be an obvious gap in the market. I googled Cross Stitch Designer, and searched forums and looking for recommendations, and eventually came across a demo for an American Package after having a play, I thought YES! This is just what I want. I took the plunge and purchased the full package.
Designing
With my husband Bob’s help, off we went. We started with simple samplers to begin with. Years ago my husband created a Hunstanton logo, which symbolised the sun setting over the sea. This is where we began, and we were happy with the finished design.  All our Hunstanton designs at some point have something which symbolises the sun setting over the sea.
Then we tried designing my dream Hunstanton Lighthouse. You can import a picture and the package automatically converts it to cross stitch. However, we found it just too complicated to stitch. There were so many threads, and shades, this was just not going to work. Then, after a lot of trial and error, we discovered something quite amazing. You can import a picture as an underlay, which brings the picture beneath the grid and you manually add the stitches. This is time consuming, but worthwhile in the end.
The Design
We chose a 6x4” counted cross stitch design because it was small enough to be used as a card, but big enough to be used as a picture, also it is not too daunting to attempt.
I stitch every design, to make sure it works (it usually does), to calculate how many threads it uses, and to enable me to take a photo of the finished product.

The Kits
After it has been stitched I then make up the kits, ready to sell with:-
14ct Aida (Aida cloth is an open weave, even-weave fabric traditionally used for cross-stitch embroidery. This cotton fabric has a natural mesh that facilitates cross-stitching and enough natural stiffness that the crafter does not need to use an embroidery hoop.)
Thread Organisers thread with DMC threads,
Pattern, Instructions and a needle, and package them up.
Children’s Kits
During the wet weather we have had, I thought how awful to be stuck in a caravan with 2 bored children. This led to the birth of a few Children’s Kits, these come with 6ct Binca Fabric, (which has larger holes in) and large Plastic colourful needles, Thread and thread organiser, Easy to read pattern and instructions.
These can also be used for people with poor vision and restricted movement, although as the crosses are larger, the design cannot be too intricate.
Marketing
My next challenge – how do I sell these. I started off selling on eBay, doing occasional sales and craft fairs. I then decided to write to the Hunstanton Tourist Information and asked would they be interested. To my delight, they were, so a selection, of the Kits, are available in Hunstanton Tourist Information. I have also started having a fortnightly stall at Docking Market. The Kits retail at £4.50.
Since those early uncertain days we have produced quite a few kits expanding away from Hunstanton, and we are buzzing with so many ideas for kits in the future.
Ed Fest
With a view to support local events, I decided to create a design to celebrate St Edmund.
This specific design draws on three main elements and uses local inspiration for the design.
The arch is St Edmunds Chapel, the wolf is the sculpture at the end of the Wolf Trail and the rest of the central feature is from the Town Sign. I am very pleased with this design and it was a fairly easy stitch, it also comes complete with the story of St Edmund.
