Quick Games

Earth, Air and Water

Need:-                         Ball or beanbag

All girls sit in a circle, one throws the beanbag to another and calls out either Air, Earth, Water.
If she calls air the girl who catches the beanbag must name a bird before the rest of the group can count to ten.
If she calls earth she must name an animal.
If she calls water she must name a fish.
If the girl completes the challenge she throws the beanbag on, If she doesn’t the beanbag is returned to the girl who threw it in the first place.

Wink Murder

Players stand in a circle, one (the detective) is sent out while the Murderer is chosen.

She disposes of people by winking at them when the Detective’s back is turned,  the victim falls to the floor with suitably dramatic gestures (preferably silent).

The detective aims to arrest the Murderer before the whole group is lying on the floor.

If successful, the Murderer becomes the Detective, and after she has left the room a new Murderer is chosen.

Initials

The leader asks a player a question; ie “Whats your favourite drink”, the player must quickly think of a two word answer which begins with her own initials ie Sarah Green might say “Sour Grapejuice” of Clare Thompson might say “Cold Tea”.
The leader needs a prepared list of subjects such as food, dress, books, games, places, holiday resorts and must not ask anyone the same question twice.

Sleeping Lions

All the players lie on the floor, being very silent and still.
The leaders go round the girls whispering and making faces to try to get the girls to laugh.
Anyone who giggles is out.

Human Alphabet

Divide everyone into equal teams of three.  Teams then attempt to make letters of the alphabet using only their own bodies.  They may stand up, lean on each other, lie down or hold each other.  Teams are awarded a point for the best formed letter.

When all 26 letters have been attempted the points are added up and the team with the most wins.

Fruit Salad

The girls sit in a circle, everyone is named after a fruit – pineapple, passion fruit or paw paw.  One girl stands in the middle and calls out the name of a fruit.
All the girls with that name try to change places, at the same time the middle girl tries to take a seat.
Whoever is left without a place, stays in the middle  and calls out the next fruit.
Make the circle quite big so everyone has to move quite a distance.
If the caller calls out Fruit Salad everyone moves.

Traffic Lights

Girls run around the room and perform the appropriate actions whenever you shout out the following

Red                 -           Stop

Amber             -           Walk Slowly
Green              -           Run
The last person to follow the instruction is given a dried bean, the winner is the girl with the fewest beans.

Lost Shoe Relay

Theme:-          Zimbabwe

The girls all take off their shoes and put them in a heap at the end of the room.
They fall in to patrols or groups, and the game is played like an ordinary relay,  the girls running up to the heaps of shoes, finding their own shows, and putting them on, running back to their group, touching the next girl who then runs, the first group to finish is the winner.

Stand Up

In pairs, sit on the floor, back to back with elbows interlinked.  Try and stand up, Easy, now find another pair and make an interlinked quartet, now stand up, not so easy, then get two quartets together and so on.

Statues

Call out the name of an animal, players adopt the form of that animal as a statue, anyone who moves is out.

Opposites

Sit in a circle, one person in the middle.  Players do everything the opposite of the one in the middle.  Raise arms when leaders are down, sit when standing etc.
Anyone failing to do so changes places.

Mirrors

In pairs, one partner is the mirror and performs a range of actions.  The other player has to imitate exactly.  After a bit change over.

Whats the time Mr Wolf?

Choose one of the players to be Mr Wolf
Mr Wolf walks away and everyone else follows him, Everyone then says loudly “Whats the time Mr Wolf?” Mr Wolf answers with any time.  When he answers “Twelve O’Clock Dinner time”.  Everyone runs as fast as they can back to the start.  Mr Wolf runs after you. The person he catches or the last one home, is the next Mr Wolf.

Cat and Mouse
All the players except 2, join hands and form a circle.  The remaining pair are the Cat and Mouse,it is the Cats job to chase and try and catch the mouse as he darts in and out of the circle. The mouse has to follow the cat in exactly the same place in the circle, and while the players lift their arms to allow the mouse through they will drop them and close ranks to hinder the cats progress.

Hunt the Shoes
Players sit in a circle and each child puts his right shoe in the middle.  At the word GO each child looks at the remaining shoe worn by the person on his right and then dives to the box to retrieve the missing shoe, the winner is the first to to find his neighbours shoe and put it on.

Ladders
The girls are divided into pairs and form two rows facing each other and sitting on the floor, legs outstretched towards each other with the soles of the feet of each pair touching (the rungs of the ladder) - each pair of girls needs to be at least a metre from the next pairs on either side. They must be told to keep their hands out of the way!
You can give the girls pairs names of associated words (animals, etc.,) or similar words (to make them listen!) and just call out the words at random; a slightly more sophisticated version of this is to use colours and call out things which are that colour - for example, call out "grass" and the pair named "green" should run; for "tomato," "red" should go, and so on.

Captain's Coming
The girls have to pretend they are on a ship and the leader calls out various instructions :
  • Climb the rigging : mime climbing action
  • Scrub the decks : mime, on hands and knees
  • Man overboard : mime swimming, ready for...
  • To the rescue! : girls form pairs and smaller one jumps up piggy-back on the bigger, anyone left over is out
  • Lifeboats - 2 (3, 4) to a boat : get into groups of the correct number, again, any left over are out
  • Port! : everyone runs to the left
  • Starboard! : everyone runs to the right - for both these, anyone who goes the wrong way is out (decide which wall is "port" and which "starboard" before you start, as the girls will be turned round in all directions!)
  • The Captain's wife : form pairs and shake hands - odd one is out again
  • Captain's coming! : girls line up and salute, last one in line is out.
Keep calling the instructions randomly and you will eventually be left with just one girl, who is therefore the winner.

Beans
A silly game with no purpose, no logical end, no winners.... it burns off steam and the girls love it!
More actions to call out and for the girls to perform : if you must, anyone who does the wrong action can be "out" or the last to perform the action, etc......
  • Jumping bean - jump up and down on the spot
  • String bean - lie down, making themselves as long and narrow as possible
  • Runner bean - run on the spot (or round the hall....)
  • French bean - hand on hip, wiggle and say "Ooh la la!"
  • Baked bean - lie flat out "sunbathing"
  • Broad bean - make themselves as "wide" as possible

 Pirates

Girls get in groups of 4, in the centre there are some bean bags, the girls have to one at a time go and get bean bags, either from the centre of orther groups, the first group to get 3/4 or 5 beanbags is the winner, you cannot stop another group stealing your beanbags.
Keys
The brownies sit in a circle and a blindfolded brownie sits on a chair in the middle with some keys underneath the chair, a brownie is selected to creep all round the circle get the keys and back to her place without being heard.
