Golden Spurs

In April 1990, when Kevin was but a twinkle in our eyes, and we were great fans of country music, we saw an advert about a new country music club being formed. We went to a meeting with Gill Denton and various others and a club, The Golden Spurs was formed.
We used to meet, once a fortnight at the Queen Victoria pub in Snettisham. Our 'resident' band was Accordian Steve. He and his wife, Kath, were comittee members. Steve used to step in when acts failed to show, or we had trouble booking someone.
Bob and I got more and more involved in the running of the club until we were doing most of the bookings, and running of the evenings. I like to believe that we made bookings without personal bias.
Members of the club included Roy and Doreen Grange, Chris and Tony Bland, Sue Hammond, Fred Cletheroe
After a while, the club relocated into the newly built function room at the Queen Vic where we were able to make a charge on the door, to raise funds for the cost of paying for the acts, we had a nightly raffle that also went for paying for the acts.
When Kevin was born he came along to the club and slept.
Bob took on doing a lot of the comparing, and he was pretty good at it. I was the Secretary and Bob the Booking Agent.
Eventually, it was decided to relocate to the Fox and Hounds in Heacham, where Bob and I eventually gave up and left it to other club members to carry on. Sad to say, it did not last very long after we left in 1996.
Eventually, the joy was taken out of it, because all we did was work, and never got to enjoy the evenings, on club evenings we made loads of sandwiches to serve, cheese and onion went down the best.
Admission Fee was £2.50 including refreshments.
One night to remember, was when Bob got up and joined Accordian Steve, with the band, playing Duelling Banjos on the fiddle, with the bands young fiddle player. Bob and he arranged the piece between them and had several practice sessions in our kitchen. Bob also learned how to play the Irish Washer Woman, a traditional Irish folk number, but he has never played it in public.
We managed to attract quite an assortment of acts over the years, some of whom whent on to be headline acts in British Country music.
