Hunstanton to Heacham and Back again

15th June 2010

Today decided to do a good leg stretch, and ssshhhh, Bob decided to join me.
Decided to walk to Heacham along the Sea Front, sun was shining, but wind a little cool, Bob said the wind was caused by the wind farm, yeah right, lol.
So we headed off towards Heacham, although wind was cool it was pleasant.

We dawdled along and spent time looking at all the holiday homes, there was a lot of spring maintenance going along, we saw one property with an unusual twisted chimney.

Then we reached Heacham North Beach the change from Hunstanton to Heacham Parish was quite distinquished the landscape completely altered, the prom came to its end and we stopped for a Bacon and Egg Bap and Drink, and Loos as Bob had been caught short.
We then continued to Heacham South Beach, as there was no longer the prom to walk along, it was harder going as we were walking through sand dunes.
Where as the North Beach has been developed South Beach remains much the same, the eating facilities were much better, Heacham River passed close by and we saw a Coot and a Mother Duck with her babies, this bought to mind the childs poem Ducks Ditty, that Jen used to love.
Ducks Ditty
All along the backwater,
Through the rushes tall,
Ducks are a-dabbling,
Up tails all.
Ducks’ tails, drake’s tails,
Yellow feet a-quiver,
Yellow bills all out of sight,
Busy in the river!
Slushy green undergrowth
Where the roach swim -
Here we keep our larder,
Cool and full and dim.
Everyone for what he likes!
We like to be
Heads down, tails up,
Dabbling free!
High in the blue above
Swifts whirl and call -
We are down a-dabbling,
Up tails all.
(Kenneth Grahame – from ‘The Wind in the Willows’)

We also passed a Donut Kiosk called Jennys Donuts.

We then started back towards Heacham North Beach, met up with the prom and continued towards Hunstanton.
We stopped en route and did some bird spotting, we are not good at identification but we gave it a go, we spotted some oystercatchers which had a most distinctive call, we wondered if it was the mating call or was it too late for that, but they seemed quite frisky for that.

We also spotted some Herring Gulls.

We also spotted Black Headed Gulls.

Then we continued our journey and ended up by walking a total of 16846 Steps and 7.71 miles.
We arrived home exhausted but satisfied, a good day was had.
