Lake District 2000

Sunday 1st October 2000
We saw Lake Windermere, visited Ambleside.  Then went for a drive over the mountains.  We went from Ambleside, to Skelwith Bridge past Chapel Stile, then started over the mountains, over Great Langdale, over Lingmoor Fell, past Little Langdale and back to Ambleside, we saw some spectacular scenery.
Then we visited the Lake District Visitor centre and took the Riverside walk by Lake Windermere, we got our feet wet!!
When we drived over the mountains I loved it so did Micheal and Kevin but of course Mum was scared.   By Jenny

The Waterfalls Adventure
We started doing some shopping in Kendal.
Then we returned to Ambleside to do the ‘Stock Ghyll Force’ Walk.
This was about 1 mile long, or so the leaflet says.  It starts not far from The Salutation Hotel, you go up the road and through some gates, it was very pretty, the Autumn Leaves were falling like snow and it looked amazing.  It rained persistant rain for half the walk.
I really enjoyed the Stock Ghyll walk I preferred walking downhill because it was hard work going up hill with Sophie in the baby carrier.  I was pleased when we reached the top.  By Jenny
Mike’s comments on Stock Ghyll Walk
We walked 1 mile which is 1.5 kilometres which is
1500 metres which is
150,000 centimetres which is
1500000 (1 million 500 thousand) millimetres which is
15000000 (Fifteen million) milli millimetres

Up the mountain, one in three
Lots of sheep, but not a tree
Round the bends, up over the pass
Just rocks and moss, and sheep and grass
Down in the valley to see a train
We finally saw the last of the rain
Then for a walk we stayed on course
To see the falls, Stanley Ghyll Force

After Ambleside we went over the mountains , we went past Little Langdale, upto Wrynose Pass, over Wrynose Bottom and then over the highest mountain we have ever been over Hard Knott Pass, the children loved it, it was literally vertical then we went as far as Eskdale, to our next fall!!
Everywhere you looked over the mountains were roaming sheep and waterfalls.
I loved going over this mountain more than yesterday so did Michael and Kevin but of course Mum was petrified she daren’t not move.  By Jenny
Stanley Ghyll Force also known as Dalegarth Force
This was a lot more wild than Stock Ghyll, it started off quite gentle through woods, then we reached the river which was a raging torent, the falls were quite spectacular it was about a 2 mile walk.
I enjoyed this walk as well just as much as the walk this morning, it was more complicated though will all the steps, rocks and twigs but I enjoyed it  By Jenny
Ghyll means river
Force means waterfall

The Tourist Bit     South Lakes Wild Animal Park
We visited the animal park this morning, it was different there was a lot of animals wondering around.
I though this wildlife park was the best I had ever been to because a lot of the animals had their space to move around such as emus and kangaroos.    By Jenny
The Aquarium of the Lakes
This was a very pleasant unusual Aquarium, very well presented.
This was a very nice Aquarium, stuff to do as well as fish to see.    By Jenny

Rydal Water
The route for this walk says 3 ¾ miles but I have my serious doubts.
We started off at Pelter Bridge car park, went down the lane until we saw a lovely view of Rydal Water.  We carried onto Rydal caves, which were formed from old slate mines, the larger cave we went in, getting in using stepping stones, over a large deposit of water.
We had lunch on top of the plateau, Kevin threw his left over lunch to the birds and a Kittiwake started diving and tried to catch it, he ended up coming closer and catching it, he was joined by other kittiwakes and some crows, whatever next, Kevin is taming wild birds now!!
We carried on reaching a stone wall and went through a kissing gate into woodland, we followed the woodland path to a footbridge over the ‘River Rothay’ and carried on and crossed the main A road where we saw an Ice Cream van and stopped for a welcome ice cream.
Upto now the weather had been fine it was around now the rain started and continued for most of the afternoon, we went up a lane which seemed to go on forever to ‘White Moss Common’.  At the top we had good views of Grassmere.
We continued over the side of the mountain hill we came out in Rydal near Rydal Mount and made our way back to the car, wet, bedraggled and tired, but it was a good varied and interesting walk.
Jenny chose this walk, we started off at 11.30 and finished at 4.30, 5 hrs, a long walk.
This was the best walk I had ever done a nice variety of walks up mountains, in caves, through woods and on roads.   By Jenny

Blackpool
Today was our main day out, it took about an hour to get there, we arrived about 12.30 and had a MacDonalds, then we looked around the town in torrential rain, we took the boys to Games Workshop.
Then we went to the Tower, it cost £10 per adult and £5 per child that included everything and you could come and go as you pleased.  Attractions included ‘Undersea World’ which was an Aquarium, it had some large turtles which were magnificent, the lighting and sound was very well done.
The Dinosaur ride took you on a ride through time and was very well done, and of course the climax was going to the top of the tower, by now the rain had stopped and the sun had come out, so we had some fantastic views of Blackpool.  At one point there is a glass floor, it is quite disturbing to look at the ground through the glass.
We have a certificate to say we went 518’ 9” to the top of the tower.
We then walked along the front to the ‘Pleasure Beach’  it was a lot longer walk than we anticipated, when we got to our destination it was £25 each to get tokens to go on rides.  We decided to just look around you can buy single tickets for some rides, but we didn’t bother, when we came out the illuminations were turned on, they were spectacular, we took a tram back to the tower, to save our legs.  We went to KFC for tea, and went on a pedestrian bridge to get a better look at the illuminations and take some pictures then we went back.
We looked around the shops and we went up Blackpool Tower, in the tower we first saw an Undersea World the best bit was seeing the sea turtles because it was the first time I had seen them, then we went back in time on the Dinosaur ride which was very good then to the top of the tower it was very high (518’ 9”).  By Jenny

Keswick   3 miles – fine
I wasn’t too happy with the walk I had chosen at Rosthwaite. I picked it because it was the right area and right length, but in Keswick I bought walk that started in the centre of Keswick, we bought some lovely sandwiches made while you wait and cakes from a local bakery delicious they were.
We left, walking through town and over the fields to Derwent Water, where we sat and ate lunch, overlooking the lake, then Kevin fed the birds, unfortunately the walk was marred by an argument between Mike and Kevin, and ended up with Kevin running away, it took quite a while to find him, he had ran through some woods, I got in a bit of a panic, but Bob and Mike found him.
We continued the walk along Derwent Water and found ourselves at the place where Kevin was found, we went through Cockshot Wood  and crossed the main road into Castlehead Wood, then we carried on up and up to the top of Castlehead, where there were spectacular views of the mountains and Derwent Water, we then meandered down hill and back to the car.  A most enjoyable walk.
This walk was good but hard work I enjoyed seeing the view from the top of the mountain and walking down was easier than walking up.  By Jenny
